THE CONCEPT
Cultural heritage is a fundamental aspect of human identity and history, and its preservation is crucial for future generations. However, cultural heritage is under threat from a variety of sources, including looting, illicit trade, and destruction due to conflict or natural disasters. The protection of cultural heritage requires a comprehensive approach that addresses not only the physical protection of heritage sites and artifacts, but also the legal and ethical framework that governs their preservation and use.
The workshop will be organized as a series of presentations followed by a panel discussion
and Q&A session. The panel discussions will cover various topics related to the protection
of cultural heritage, such as:
• The looting and illicit trade of cultural heritage
• The destruction of cultural heritage in conflict and post-conflict situations
• The role of international law and institutions in the protection of cultural heritage
• The ethical and normative approaches to the protection of cultural heritage and
their potential contradictions
